Factitious Disorders

Factitious disorders are challenging and often misunderstood conditions that affect both physical and emotional health. These disorders involve behaviors where individuals fabricate or induce symptoms of illness, often stemming from deeper emotional struggles.

At Owensboro Psychiatric Group, we offer compassionate care to help those affected better understand their condition and take meaningful steps toward healing.

What Are Factitious Disorders?

They are a group of mental health conditions where individuals intentionally fake or exaggerate symptoms of illness to gain medical attention or sympathy. Unlike malingering, which is motivated by external rewards, factitious disorders are driven by emotional needs often rooted in deeper psychological struggles. These behaviors, while deliberate, are typically not fully understood by the individual and require compassionate, professional care.

There are two main types of factitious disorders:

  • Imposed on Oneself: Individuals create or exaggerate symptoms in themselves, often undergoing unnecessary medical treatments.
  • Imposed on Another (formerly Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy): Caregivers, often a parent, fabricate or induce illness in someone else, usually a child, to gain attention or sympathy.

What Are the Symptoms of Factitious Disorders?

The symptoms of factitious disorders can vary but often include:

  • Exaggerating or fabricating symptoms of illness
  • Frequent hospital visits or medical procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of medical conditions or terminology
  • Reluctance to allow doctors to speak with previous healthcare providers
  • Symptoms that do not align with diagnostic tests or that worsen when observed

Can Factitious Disorders Lead to Serious Health Problems?

Yes, factitious disorders can result in significant health risks, both for the individual and others. In cases imposed on oneself, unnecessary medical treatments or procedures can lead to complications or long-term harm. When imposed on another, the affected individual may suffer physical injury, emotional trauma, or even life-threatening conditions. Addressing these behaviors promptly is critical for everyone’s well-being.

What Can You Do?

If you or someone you know may be struggling with factitious disorders, seeking professional help is essential. Early intervention can prevent further harm and help individuals develop healthier ways to cope. It’s important to approach the situation with empathy and avoid confrontation, as this can worsen feelings of distress or mistrust.
